About Us
CO-OWNERSHIP
Co-Ownership is a Do It Yourself Shared Ownership scheme (DIYSO) exclusively for Northern Ireland. If you hope to own your own home but can't quite afford it, Co-Ownership may help you onto the home ownership ladder.
Co-Ownership has been running very successfully since 1978 and has helped more than 19,000 households to purchase the homes of their choice through shared ownership.
Purchasers take as large a share as they can afford to start with – 40%, 50%, 62.5% or 75%. They can then increase that share at any time ('staircasing').
Co-Ownership purchasers are known as leaseholders because they receive a 99 year equity sharing lease on their properties. 3 out of 4 leaseholders so far have taken the next step up the ladder and staircased, most of them leaving Co-Ownership behind entirely.
NICHA
The Northern Ireland Co-Ownership Housing Association Limited, better known as Co-Ownership Housing, is Northern Ireland's regional body for shared ownership and the organisation that runs the Co-Ownership Scheme.
We are a registered housing association and industrial & provident society, regulated and funded by the Department for Social Development. Our main objectives are to
- promote and sustain the concept of Co-Ownership here in Northern Ireland
- assist in the rebuilding and revitalising of neighbourhoods and sustainable communities.
We are governed by a Board of Management. The Board meets around 6 times a year. Board members are unpaid volunteers.

CONSULTING YOU
Shareholding membership
Membership is a way for people to show their support for NICHA and play a part in running the organisation. Members elect the NICHA board each year and can stand for election themselves.
Leaseholders are not automatically shareholders in the association. Everyone has to apply.
Become a shareholder and play a part in running Co-Ownership.
For more information contact nicha@co-ownership.org.
Co-Ownership panel
The panel is made up of Co-Ownership leaseholders who are willing to offer feedback on their past experiences and any services they would like to receive in future.
Become a panellist and consult on issues and services that affect you.
