Community Fund 2019

Community groups with a social, educational or environmental focus are being encouraged to apply for a share of the 2019/20 Co-Ownership Community Fund. The fund, which has a total budget of £15,000, is open to local organisations and partnerships to either support their continued community work or to finance a new or specific project.

Now in its third year, the fund is earmarked for groups and projects which help regenerate, rebuild, and revitalise neighbourhoods and communities, provide support to the elderly and disabled, and provide advice or educational services to promote financial capability, inclusion, energy efficiency or encourages biodiversity in the community. Following a judging process, the fund may be awarded in full to one or more applicants.

Last years winning project

In 2018/19 the winning project was from Street Soccer NI. The football project supports some of the most vulnerable groups in Northern Ireland including homeless people, people with drug and alcohol dependency, mental health issues, ex-prisoners, refugees, asylum seekers and the long-term unemployed. The money was used to implement a Homeless World Cup development project which helped Street Soccer NI roll out a programme of training and support initiatives in the run up to and after the tournament including housing and tenancy support, employability, opportunities to gain accreditation and qualifications in coaching and refereeing, as well as practical support for mental health issues and addiction intervention.

Brian Lyndsay, player, said: ‘The football was amazing, very fast, very warm and a great experience playing against all the different nations and against quality opposition. It was a life changing and eye opening event. It gave me a new perpesctive of my life and living situation. It’s also given me the confidence and belief in myself for the next chapter of my life. Since returning from Mexico I’ve become an ambassador for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and got a full time job with Stena Line and I’m looking at getting my own private rental soon.’’
