Co-Ownership raises nearly £5,000 for Meningitis Now

By: Co-Ownership

Every year the team at Co-Ownership choose a charity to help raise money for. The chosen charity for the financial year 2018/19 was Meningitis Now. They receive no government funding, need over £3 million per year to continue their work, and rely heavily on donations from the public and other organisations.

Meningitis Now is working towards a future where no one in the UK dies from meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need. Their works focuses on 4 main areas:

  1. Research. The charity supports research that finds new, and enhances existing, vaccines to save lives and prevent disability.
  2. Support. The charity provides specialist support to help rebuild lives and ensure no-one has to face meningitis alone.
  3. Awareness. The charity saves lives through awareness and education, giving people the knowledge and confidence to say “I suspect meningitis” – fast action saves lives.
  4. Campaigns. The charity campaigns for the introduction of licensed vaccines as soon as they are available in the UK.

As an organisation with a strong sense of social purpose, Co-Ownership is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. Gillian Hughes, Head of Governance says:

“Charitable giving and getting involved with our wider community is really important to everyone at Co-Ownership.  Our day to day work is to assist people onto the property ladder and our staff are hugely committed to helping people.  They really want to make a difference.  That ethos extends to their support for our chosen charity, Meningitis Now.  They have been fantastically supportive and enthusiastic in their fundraising efforts over the last year.  Their engagement and support has resulted in us raising the highest amount we have ever raised for any of our chosen charities.  For a small organisation the £4,847 raised is a credit to every single one of them.  Our Charity Committee Chair, Gillian Lavery, has been terrific in getting everyone on board with supporting our fundraising events.  We look forward to matching or exceeding this amount next year.”

Joanne Wilson from Meningitis Now, came in and met with members of the Charity committee who were involved in organising the numerous events throughout the year. She chatted with the team, explaining the work that the charity carries out and how the money would be used. She later said:

“I am totally overwhelmed by the final donation and support from Co-Ownership over the last year. It’s incredible. With no government funding we rely totally on voluntary donations to help us provide vital services. Around 14,488 people living in Northern Ireland could be struggling to cope with the life changing after-effects of meningitis – and every year another 260 people could find themselves fighting the impact of the devastating disease. This donation will help us to save lives and rebuild futures. Thank you everyone involved you have made such a difference.”

Our charity committee meet throughout the year to organise fundraising events such as coffee mornings, raffles and dress down days. It really is a team effort which everyone enjoys!
